Outcomes & Careers

What can you do with a degree in English? Anything you want!

English majors from UIC have gone on to a range of careers in media, publishing, writing and editing, broadcasting, teaching, academia, research, public relations, and more. Thanks in part to our excellent internship program, majoring or minoring in English at UIC is one of the smartest career moves you can make.

Many of our PhDs go on to careers as faculty in a wide range of institutions of higher education. Use the job placement link at left to view those alumni. We are also proud of those alumni who choose alternative career paths. Recent graduates in this vein have gone on to become an editor at Jacobin, an education consultant, and the Program Assistant in the Chicago Studies Program at the Newberry Library, among others. Our Master’s students have an excellent track record of acceptance into PhD (and even JD) programs at institutions like Brown, University of Colorado at Boulder, and SUNY Binghamton. Many of them also choose career paths in secondary education, higher education, writing, editing, public relations and marketing, and other fields.
