The English Club

English Club Logo

What is The English Club?

We are a group of students with the goal to build a better community within the English Department here at UIC. We strive to provide social connections, events & activities, and networking opportunities—not to mention lots of snacks!

I’m interested in joining. How can I do that?

The only thing you need to do to be a member of the English Club is to show up! All are welcome to join, you don’t have to be an English major or minor.

Does The English Club have a meeting place?

We meet every first Monday of the month from 4:30-6PM. If you’ve got the time, you’re more than welcome to stop by University Hall in Room 1850—even if it is just to drop by and say hello!

Upcoming Meetings

TBD

Looking for something to pass by time in between classes? Or maybe just want to be more involved with campus? Whatever it may be, here are some upcoming events the English Club and UIC has to offer for you!

Open Mic Night

Twice a semester, the English Club hosts an Open Mic Night at the Daley Library. Drop by Room 1-470 anytime from 5-7PM to hear the works of others (or even share your own!). All creative works are welcome—poems, songs, short stories—and no registration is required. The only thing you have to bring is an open mind (though an appetite for free pizza is also recommended).

Upcoming Open Mic Meeting Times

TBD

Book Club

The English Club is currently workshopping a Book Club. While nothing is scheduled at the moment, we encourage you to share your opinions at English Club meetings so we can gauge interest (it might help to know that The English Club will cover the cost of books for attendees). In the meantime, stay tuned for more info by joining our GroupMe or following our Instagram at the links below!

Creative Writing Workshop

Weird Fiction Seminar with Bradley Sides
Wednesday, May 7

Zoom | 6:00 pm

Sigma Tau Delta invites you to a webinar featuring Bradley Sides, author of Those Fantastic Lives and Crocodile Tears Didn’t Cause the Flood. He’ll share insight into the process of crafting stories that tiptoe between the lines of reality and the surreal. How does weird fiction allow authors to delve into deep emotional truths? What draws us to the uncanny? These questions (as well as others) will all be answered, so if you’re intrigued by the storytelling process or want to add to your endless TBR, stop by! Click here to register.
