Dr. Margena A. Christian Named Black History Maker by UIC CCSB

Black History Makers will be honored in virtual ceremony on February 22.

Margena A. Christian, Ed.D. and Senior Lecturer in English, has been chosen by the UIC Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Blacks (CCSB) as a Black History Maker for 2021.

Dr. Christian was a senior editor at Ebony and a features editor at Jet. During her 19 years with Johnson Publishing Company (JPC), she penned countless stories and covers for both magazines, including in 2003 the first-ever cover story of Tyler Perry in a national publication. Dr. Christian is the author of Empire: The House That John H. Johnson Built (The Life and Legacy of A Pioneering Publishing Magnate). She has also been acknowledged for her teaching by the university through the Teaching Recognition Program in Academic Year 2019-2020 and as a 2017 recipient of the Lecturers' Distinguished Teaching Award for English Studies.

Dr. Christian teaches courses in the Professional Writing Minor as well as the First Year Writing Program.

The UIC CCSB Black History Makers Awards Ceremony will take place at 6 pm on Monday, February 22. It is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
