Black Studies Concentration Now Available

Grad students in English at UIC can now pursue an interdepartmental concentration in Black Studies

As of Fall 2019, Master's and PhD students at UIC can now get a concentration in Black Studies at UIC through the Department of African American Studies (AAST).

To concentrate in Black Studies, students must take 17 hours total of AAST courses, including AAST 501 (4 hours) and 502 (1 hour). 8 hours of the concentration may be within the student's home department with approval from the AAST Director of Graduate Studies.

The Black Studies concentration joins Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) and Gender and Women's Studies (GWS) concentrations already available to English graduate students. Interdepartmental concentrations allow students to do interdisciplinary research and gain expertise in another field than their home department.

To enroll, fill out the Black Studies Concentration survey, or email AAST at aast@uic.edu.
