“Playing with Sentences”–Jeff Kessler and Doug Sheldon

TeachWrite Series (FYWP)

October 9, 2019

3:15 PM - 4:30 PM

Location

2028 UH

Address

Chicago, IL 60612

In the seminar, we (Jeff Kessler and Doug Sheldon) will provide practical models and activities to help students use their implicit knowledge of grammatical structures to make more explicit choices in their writing, including use of specific grammatical terms and metacognitive reflection. We'll focus particularly on the sentence level and demonstrate several activities related to FYW that can help students experiment with and learn to expand their notions of how a sentence's structure can facilitate its meaning. In addition, we will outline different historical methods for teaching grammar including implicit v. explicit understandings, liberation v. deficit linguistics, etc, expanding on the findings from the FYWP's "Tools not Rules" guidelines.
