Welcome to the website of the Graduate Program in English at the University of Illinois in Chicago. We offer Masters degrees in literary critical studies, creative writing, and English education. Our PhDs are offered in literary critical studies and creative writing.
Our graduate program is rated in the top 20 in the United States and the top two in Illinois. We are very proud of the accomplishments and reputations of our faculty who have national and international reputations.
Our graduate students are of top quality with our Masters students moving on to PhD programs at Johns Hopkins, University of California, and University of Pittsburgh, University of Chicago, and Rice University among others. We do reserve limited space for our best Masters students who wish to continue on in our own PhD program at UIC. Our PhD students have secured positions or post docs at places like Amherst College, Binghamton University, University of Buffalo, the University of North Carolina, Washington University at St. Louis, and the University of Puget Sound. They have published in prestigious journals like the PMLA, Twentieth Century Literature, and the New Yorker magazine. Our graduate students benefit from the close relations we have with the journals Mediations and nonsite.org.
We value our intellectual community and encourage our graduate students to become part of an ongoing dialogue that takes place each week at colloquia and public lectures. Perhaps more than in other departments, this group experience contributes to a departmental zeitgeist of spirited interchange and critical precision.
Our strengths as a department lie in the areas of American literature, contemporary fiction and poetry, women and gender studies, queer studies, creative writing, rhetoric, transnational studies, Marxist studies, 19th century British, Elizabethan and Renaissance, disability studies, and postcolonial and Anglophone literatures.
Our PhD in creative writing boasts a superb faculty who have published widely and garnered many awards and honors. Poets and Writers magazine recently rated our creative writing program sixth in the country, and placed us in the highest creative writing job placement rank among the top 15 programs in the US. In our creative writing staff, we have a Distinguished Professor, a University Scholar and two graduate mentorship award-winners.
