Scholarships
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers a number of scholarships. Any of the following is a particularly good fit for English students and we encourage you to apply. See the full list of LAS scholarships.
Bernard Shaw Prize
The prize is named after the distinguished journalist and CNN anchor. It is awarded annually to qualified LAS undergraduates majoring in Communication, English/journalism, History, or Political Science. The purpose of The Bernard Shaw Prize is to recognize superior academic and civic achievement, to encourage further educational study, and to help students needing financial assistance. Recipients must demonstrate at least two years as a UIC student (60 credit hours completed by end of current Spring semester), an outstanding record of academic accomplishments (minimum gpa 3.0), along with exemplary leadership and citizenship.
Each recipient will reflect Shaw's strength of character and have an outstanding record of accomplishment over a period of at least two years as a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago. That is, recipients are to have demonstrated, over a minimum of two years before they receive the Prize or a Scholarship, an outstanding record of academic accomplishment and exemplary leadership and citizenship, and must write and submit a 3-page, double-spaced (or equivalent) essay describing and explaining the recipient's education intent and life goals.
Preference given to students who have demonstrated or indicated an academic, leadership, career or service interest consistent with the universal values and interests exemplified by Bernard Shaw.
To apply submit i) a three-page, double-spaced essay explaining your educational intent and life goals; ii) a graded writing sample from one of your UIC classes. Dwayne Johnson-Cochran Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is specifically for students entering their junior or senior year next year who have an interest in pursuing film school or a career in film production, screen-writing, or editing and who have financial need. The PNA-Hugh Hill Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established by the Polish National Alliance to honor Chicago journalist and political reporter, Hugh Hill, and is available to LAS undergraduates majoring in English or Communication. Applicants must have past or current internship experience in electronic and/or print media at a television or radio station, magazine, or newspaper. Application deadline November 30, 2025. The Michelle Flowers Diversity Fellowship Program is now accepting applications. Now in its fifth year, the PRSA Chicago Michelle Flowers Diversity Fellowship Program is designed to attract, recruit and retain people of color to the practice of public relations and communications.
