LAS Graduate Student Featured in Upcoming Gallery 400 Event
Tyler Mills, PhD student in Poetry at UIC, is among the speakers at Gallery 400’s upcoming Ghost Nature Reading Series exhibit, supported, in part, by the LAS Department of English. The three-part reading series features "artists, poets, and writers whose work complements Ghost Nature, a group exhibition at Gallery 400 based around the strangeness of the natural world."
The reading series will take place Fridays at 12:00 p.m. in the Gallery 400 lecture room, located at 400 S. Peoria St., Chicago, Ill. The reading series will include the following speakers:
February 7 - Tyler Mills
Tyler Mills is the author of Tongue Lyre, winner of the 2011 Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award (SIU Press, 2013). A poet and essayist, Mills reads a series of poems that explore the detonation of the first atomic bomb and subsequent nuclear tests, space and non-space, landscape, and the language of historical discovery. Her poetry and prose have recently appeared in Blackbird, Believer, Boston Review, Robert Frost Review, and Writer’s Chronicle. She has received awards from the Crab Orchard Review, Gulf Coast, and Third Coast, and scholarships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and the Vermont Studio Center. A graduate of the University of Maryland (MFA, Poetry), she is Editor-in-Chief of The Account: A Journal of Poetry, Prose, and Thought. She lives in Chicago, where she is currently working on a PhD at the University of Illinois-Chicago and helps organize the Wit Rabbit reading series.
February 21 - Laurie Palmer
Laurie Palmer is an artist, writer, and educator. Her work is concerned with social and environmental justice, amplifying access to shared resources, and exploring matter’s active nature. Palmer reads “Silicon” from her forthcoming book, In the Aura of a Hole: Exploring Material Extraction Sites, which is also reprinted in the catalogue for Ghost Nature. Palmer has been a member of the art collective Haha for twenty years and views collaboration as an ongoing and central component of her practice. Recent projects include Still Yet Else Further Again..., a solo exhibition at threewalls Gallery, Chicago, and Chicago Torture Justice Memorials, an ongoing collaborative project first exhibited at Sullivan Galleries, Chicago. Palmer has published two project-based books: 3 Acres on the Lake: DuSable Park Proposal Project, documenting a collaborative public project that she initiated, and With Love from Haha, documenting twenty years of Haha's site-based work (both published by University of Chicago Press). Palmer teaches sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
February 28 - Peter O'Leary
Peter O’Leary has published four books of poetry: Watchfulness, Depth Theology, Luminous Epinoia, and, in 2013, Phosphorescence of Thought, a poem about the evolution of consciousness. O’Leary reads poetry from his project Earth Is Best – a series of odes about mushrooms and mushroom foraging, the mythology of the frosty north country, and religious imagination. He has edited several volumes of Johnson’s poetry, including The Shrubberies, Radios, and a new edition of Johnson’s masterpiece, ARK, all from Flood Editions. Recently, he also edited Is Music: Selected Poems by John Taggart. In 2002, his critical study, Gnostic Contagion: Robert Duncan & the Poetry of Illness, was published. He lives in Berwyn, Illinois and teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Committee on Creative Writing at the University of Chicago. With John Tipton, he directs the small poetry press Verge Books.
