Download iCal FileThis conference aims to explore conversations that are currently being pursued across a range of disciplines on the importance of archives to cultural understanding. The practice of acquiring, preserving, and administering cultural artefacts is of greater importance now than ever, and this conference seeks to expose why archiving has become a topic of urgent intellectual discussion in our schools and communities. Still more, we will discuss and debate questions that are crucial for both scholars and archivists: how are archives connected to issues of justice, particularly as they pertain to the records of marginalized and vulnerable communities? How is “value” constructed by archives, and how are notions of value currently being challenged and reshaped in ways that influence the collections used by students and scholars? How do changes in media influence presentation efforts, and change the way that we approach the very notion of an archive as stable or preserved? Even as this conference brings together scholars from across the disciplines, it will also feature the work of librarian archivists at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Daley Library, and it will include an exhibit of materials connected to themes explored in the conference.
